Job Description

Chemist/Microbiologist for Savage Lab

Join the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at BYU in our Microbiology Laboratory, where you’ll play a key role in advancing novel antibiotic research with real-world medical impact. In this position, you’ll design and run susceptibility experiments, develop and evaluate antimicrobial coatings for medical devices, and gain valuable leadership experience by mentoring a small team of undergraduate researchers. This is an ideal opportunity for an early-career scientist who wants to build technical expertise, grow as a research leader, and contribute to innovative work at the intersection of microbiology, chemistry, and healthcare.

Note: This is a part-time position 17.5 hours per week.

What you’ll do in this position:

  • Perform susceptibility experiments with novel antibiotics against common microorganisms
  • Prepare antimicrobial coatings on medical devices
  • Measure antibiotic elution from medical device coatings
  • Manage a small group (4-5) of undergraduate researchers

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • BA or BS in microbiology, biochemistry or related field.

Preferred

  • One year of experience in a microbiology laboratory.

Pay Grade: 48

Typical Starting Pay: $20.50 - $26.50
