Lighthouse Lab Services seeks a full-time Cytotechnologist in Spartanburg, SC for an innovative, High Complexity pathology lab committed to delivering timely and accurate pathology testing to meet the diagnostics needs of the medical community and help improve patient care.
ABOUT THE POSITION
Under the direction of the Cytology General Supervisor and Medical Director, the Cytotechnologist focuses on the accurate screening and evaluation of cytology specimens, ensuring proper documentation, quality control, and compliance with laboratory standards. The position supports timely case review and pathologist collaboration while maintaining proficiency, regulatory readiness, and effective use of laboratory systems. It also contributes to training, quality initiatives, and overall laboratory operations.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Satisfactorily processes gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens when asked in
- accordance with laboratory procedure manual.
- Screens gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens in an accurate and timely matter.
- Confirms patient name and case number on slide with patient name and case number in laboratory
- information system for every case. Resolves any discrepancies before sign-out.
- Searches for pertinent patient history including past and pending biopsies in hospital database on all
- non-gynecologic cytology specimens. Notes any concurrent specimens on cytology report.
- Signs out negative gynecologic cytology reports.
- Assigns abnormal gynecologic and all non-gynecologic cytology cases to Pathologist for sign-out after
- completion of screening.
- Accurately identifies fungi, parasites, and viral changes.
- Documents number of slides screened (imaged and manual), and records on a daily basis.
- Utilizes quality control procedures on a routine basis according to established standards, including
- referral of 10% of negative Paps for re-screening and performing daily stain quality checks.
- Prioritizes “rush” cases and screens and sends to pathologist in a timely manner.
- Notifies Cytology Supervisor of any equipment or technical issues
- Maintains good working knowledge of and follows all laboratory policies and procedures.
- Annually reviews and signs Cytology Laboratory Manual.
- Passes annual proficiency examination.

- Demonstrates solid knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.

- Assists with training of new employees.
- Assists with teaching of rotating cytotechnology and medical students.
- Assists in special projects, quality assurance activities, and research.
- Participates in continuing medical education.
- Maintains in-depth working knowledge of techniques, principles, and their interrelationships affecting
- test results.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
- Recognizes and solves problems by identifying the cause(s), synthesizing alternatives, and determining
- Solutions.
- Assists Cytology Supervisor in preparing for laboratory inspections. Participates in inspection of outside laboratories when asked.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
- Understand and adhere to group and facility standards of practice including all areas of safety, OSHA, CLIA, EPA and HIPAA regulations.
- Understand and adhere to compliance plans, policies and confidentiality requirements.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the general work duties (look up reports, answer phones, etc.).
- Attend required meetings, in-services and training.
- Maintain credentials and licensure (if applicable).
- Participate in Quality Assurance activities, collation or reporting.
- Assure the proper maintenance of equipment, the provision of adequate supplies, and the cleanliness of laboratory and individual work areas.
- Understand potential risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens, and/or toxic/biohazardous materials that are common in a laboratory environment. Safety training and personal protective equipment will be provided.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- BS degree in biology, chemistry, or life sciences is required and completion of an accredited Cytotechnologist program
- CT(ASCP) certification
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience conducting cytology testing
EXPERIENCE PREFERRED
- Working knowledge of Molecular testing
- Experience using ThinPrep, Roche, Hologic, and Cobas instrumentation
SHIFT, SALARY, BENEFITS
- Shift: M-F 1st shift
- Pay range: $34.62-$40/hr depending on education and experience
