Job Summary:
The laboratory manager plans, organizes and manages the laboratory department. Monitors the daily testing to assure quality results. Meets with physicians to organize patient testing in the best ways. Trains, supervises, and evaluates staff. Meets and discusses lab operation with employees, patients, and the public. Accuracy of test results must be assured by the laboratory manager. The manager must be a licensed Medical Technologist and capable to perform a wide variety of laboratory procedures, using both manual and automated methods. The manager must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to interact with and provide service appropriate to the age of the patients served. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to provide the service needed as described in the department's guidelines and procedures.

Education:
Required\:
Successful completion of training from an approved school of Medical Technology.

Preferred\:
Bachelor degree with major in biological science or related field required plus certified as MT by ASCP or equivalent.

Experience:
Required\:
General familiarity with all routine lab testing. Ability to work with sophisticated laboratory instrumentation. Ability to work with pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

Preferred\:
Previous experience in a clinical laboratory setting.

Position Requirement(s)\: License/Certification/Registration
Required:
Must be qualified as an MT according to CLIA 1988 standards section for laboratory personnel and be registered by ASCP, HHS, AMT, ABB or equivalent

Department Position Summary:
The lab manager performs chemical, microscopic and bacteriological testing of body fluids to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of disease. He/she works closely with the Lab director d team members in an atmosphere of continuous quality improvement. He/she performs other duties as assigned by Laboratory Director.

The employee must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her section. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's policies
