Work type: Full Time (Permanent) 38 hours per week

Schedule: Rotating roster between 7am - 8pm Monday to Friday, 8am – 3pm Saturday and on call as required.

Reporting to the Regional Laboratory Area Manager, you’ll lead a close‑knit team in a dynamic environment, managing shifting priorities and ensuring the laboratory consistently delivers safe, accurate results for the Townsville community. It’s a role well suited to someone who values accountability, enjoys solving problems as they arise, and is motivated by seeing the direct impact of their leadership and decisions in a regional setting.

What You Will Be Doing

 

As Laboratory Manager, you’ll take ownership of the day‑to‑day operations of the Townsville laboratory, leading a small team while remaining actively involved in hands‑on scientific work within a multi‑disciplinary environment.

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead and support a small team of Medical Scientists and Laboratory Operations staff across Biochemistry and Haematology/Coagulation/Blood Bank.
  • Prioritise workflows to meet client requirements and ensure results are delivered within agreed turnaround times.
  • Liaise with senior staff and Pathologists regarding unusual or abnormal results.
  • Oversee laboratory equipment performance, including routine maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain and review laboratory documentation to ensure procedures remain current and compliant.
  • Promote a safe, quality focused working environment aligned to regulatory and accreditation standards.

 

 

What Type of Person Will Be Successful

 

To be successful in this role, you’ll be an experienced Scientist who values ownership and accountability in a small, multi‑disciplinary laboratory setting. You’re comfortable working calmly under pressure, highly organised in your approach, and confident making decisions that protect quality, safety, and turnaround times.

 

You will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Bachelor of Science (Medical Science) or other AIMS accredited equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working in a multi-disciplinary scientific role.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and professionally with laboratory teams and clinical stakeholders.
  • Proven experience prioritising competing tasks to meet turnaround times in a busy, time critical environment.
  • A practical, solutions focused approach with strong attention to detail and sound problem-solving skills.
  • A strong commitment to confidentiality, integrity, and appropriate scientific judgement.
