Medical Technician / Phlebotomist – VA Medical Center (Togus, Augusta, ME)

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking experienced Medical Technicians (Phlebotomists) to support the Department of Veterans Affairs Maine Healthcare System (VA Togus) in Augusta, Maine. This is a full-time, on-site federal contract position providing critical laboratory services to our nation's Veterans.
This is a stable, long-term opportunity backed by a federal contract (base year + 4 option years through 2031). Positions are available on day shift and evening shift, with rotating weekend coverage approximately 1–2 weekends per month.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
• Day Shift: $26.49/hr — federal SCA prevailing wage (Kennebec County, ME)
• Evening Shift: $27.49/hr — includes evening differential
• Holiday / Overtime: 1.5x base rate
• Health & Welfare fringe benefits per federal Service Contract Act requirements
• Long-term contract stability: Base Year + 4 Option Years (through August 2031)
AVAILABLE SHIFTS
Day Shift: 0900 – 1730 | Monday–Friday + Rotating Weekends
Evening Shift: 1500 – 2330 | Monday–Friday + Rotating Weekends
Weekend Day: 0600 – 1400 | Approximately 1–2 weekends per month
Weekend Evening: 1330 – 2100 | Approximately 1–2 weekends per month
Holiday and overtime coverage required on an as-needed basis. On-call/standby duties are NOT required.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
• Perform patient phlebotomy: inpatient ward rounds, outpatient, Emergency Department (ED), STAT, ASAP, and timed draws
• Process specimens and prepare send-out specimens
• Cross-train in specimen spin-down and send-out testing look-up procedures
• Positively identify patients and specimens prior to collection, testing, or aliquoting
• Independently test, evaluate, document, and report patient test results and Quality Control (QC)
• Identify, document, and resolve collection, processing, testing, or reporting issues
• Safeguard electronic and paper patient information in compliance with HIPAA and VA privacy standards
• Participate in monthly Laboratory Quality Improvement and Staff Meetings
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
• Minimum 3 years of recent phlebotomy experience required
Education — One of the following:
• Completion of a full-time (~1 year) medical/clinical laboratory assistant training program including chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology; OR
• Associate degree with second-year completion of an accredited laboratory assistant training program; OR
• Bachelor's degree with a major in a relevant science or minimum 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position
Certifications & Clearances:
• National phlebotomy certification: NOT required
• BLS certification: NOT required at application — VA provides training upon onboarding
• ACLS: NOT required
• Must pass a federal background investigation (Tier 1 / Low Risk)
• Must be eligible to work in the United States (E-Verify employer)
• Must not appear on the HHS OIG List of Excluded Individuals/Entities
• Pre-employment health documentation required prior to first shift: TB test, MMR, Varicella, Tdap, Influenza, and Hepatitis B vaccination series
