Part Time (40 Hours/Biweekly)
Shift: Days (hours primarily between 0500-1530)(8-hour shifts)
every third weekend, every third holiday
Position Function: Performs and interprets routine diagnostic procedures in chemistry, hematology, microbiology and immunology. General technicians will ordinarily be assigned to regular routine work in various divisions of the laboratory.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
1. Understands and follows hospital fire and safety procedures: knows personal role in case of a fire.
2. Maintains membership and active participation in ASCP as a registered Medical Technologist.
3. Understands and follows all departmental policies and procedures.
4. Exhibits a thorough knowledge of safety requirements in the laboratory as well as special requirements in the designated departmental area of responsibility.
5. Assesses and reassigns workload in order to comply with emergency or critical request requirements.
6. Communicates with other shifts regarding departmental work.
7. Performs routine and stat procedures according to laboratory specifications as described in procedure manuals; performs repeat tests when results are questionable.
8. Collects patient specimens using age appropriate criteria, when needed and correctly labels and initials.
9. Performs procedures within the stated turnaround time at least 95% of the time.
10. Calls stat or critical values according to current laboratory policy.
11. Enter results into computer system within 1 hour of test completion with a minimum of 99% accuracy.
12. Performs and interprets diagnostic procedures: performs repeat tests when results are questionable.
13. Judges adequacy of submitted specimens.
14. Is familiar with reference ranges, knows expected deviations from normal and acts according to prescribed procedures. Investigates possible causes for abnormal results.
15. Performs and results quality control as required and reports corrective action in maintenance logs for Quality Control problems 100% of the times. Ensures that quality control criteria are met before patient's reports are accepted.
16. Performs preventative and corrective maintenance on instruments and reports in writing if instruments not functioning properly.
17. Applies problem solving and trouble shooting skills to identify problems affecting instruments, techniques or other components.
18. Is familiar with and helps comply with QA standards and indicators.
19. Assures and demonstrates compliance with regulations established by accrediting bodies through successful participation in CAP and other inspection entities.
20. Maintains and achieves departmental competency in bench skills through annual assessment by Section Manager with completion of annual packets for each department as appropriate.
21. Practices cost saving procedures commensurate with maintaining quality standards.
22. Successfully participates in CAP surveys.
23. Attends continuing education seminars/professional meetings.
24. Assists with evaluation of new or modified techniques.
25. Assists in training new employees.
26. Assists with student interns and student tours of the laboratory.
27. Evaluates and restocks supplies as depleted, alerts supervisor when necessary and/or orders through appropriate source.
28. Cleans countertops a minimum of once per shift or as required to maintain a safe and sanitary work environment.
29. Maintains proficiency in operating, maintaining and troubleshooting all automated equipment in the designated departmental area.
30. Assumes supervisory duties in the absence of section supervisor.
31. Attends monthly staff meetings to stay informed of continual changes in the lab.
32. Fulfills annual continuing education requirements and reports to Education Department for tracking.
33. Assists Section Manager in collection and reporting of QA/QC data.
34. Is responsible for complete verification and documentation of scheduled maintenance.
35. Assists Section Manager in development and maintenance of policy and procedure manuals.
36. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Standards
Education: Meets educational requirements set forth by ASCP for a Medical Technologist (MT)/ Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS). Bachelor's degree required.
Experience: Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required.
Certifications/Licensure: Registered or registry eligible as a Medical Technologist/ Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the Registry Board of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT). Must achieve registered status within one year of employment.
