Job Description
Under minimal supervision, the Medical Technologist applies advanced technical skills and seasoned judgment to independently provide a full range of sample test analyses and laboratory services in a hospital-based laboratory. This role involves performing CLIA defined high complexity testing and includes responsibilities that directly or indirectly affect the quality of patient care.
Responsibilities
- Perform all levels of testing, including high complexity testing and laboratory services.
- Evaluate, judge, and interpret test results for accuracy.
- Identify and resolve inconsistencies in patient results, collaborating with MLTs and LSTs to troubleshoot issues.
- Provide specialized expertise in microbiology, transfusion medicine, molecular biology, and infectious disease safety.
- Ensure sample suitability and perform patient specimen testing.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, ensure quality control, and functionality of instruments.
- Assist the laboratory manager with staff training, competency evaluations, and process improvement activities.
- Write and coordinate the review and update of departmental procedures.
- Prepare the lab for inspection from regulatory institutions and assist in implementing CAP standards and CLIA regulations.
Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field.
- One year of progressive clinical experience or one year of hospital internship subsequent to degree.
- Certification as a Medical Technologist (ASCP), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (AMT), or equivalent certification.
