In this position, you will operate autonomously, evaluating the compliance of environmental laboratories with state and national accreditation standards, regulations, and guidelines. Your assessments will cover various matrices, including drinking water, non-potable water, and solid chemical materials. A solid understanding of both basic and advanced microbiology, along with a general knowledge of organics, metals, radiochemistry, and inorganic nonmetals, is crucial. Additionally, you may serve as a witness in legal or administrative hearings. You will conduct internal audits of the Laboratory Accreditation Program and will be responsible for reading, comprehending, and applying current regulations and guidelines, as well as suggesting modifications to enhance the environmental laboratory accreditation program.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days a week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $59,345.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• One year as a Microbiologist 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• One year of professional laboratory work experience in microbiology, and a bachelor’s degree that includes 20 credits in microbiology, cellular biology, molecular biology or bacteriology and 12 credits in chemistry or biochemistry; or
• A graduate degree in microbiology.
• Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Conditions of Employment: 

• This position requires possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.
