Key Responsibilities

As a Speech Pathologist, you will:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of clients' speech, language, voice, fluency, swallowing, and cognitive-communication needs using evidence-based tools and clinical observations.
  • Design and implement individualised intervention programs to improve communication skills, social participation, and safe swallowing in daily life.
  • Recommend and trial augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, adaptive strategies, and modifications to environments for enhanced independence.
  • Collaborate within multidisciplinary teams (e.g., with occupational therapists, physiotherapists, paediatricians, educators, NDIS coordinators, and support staff) to monitor progress and adjust interventions.
  • Provide education and training to clients, families, carers, and educators on strategies, techniques, and resources to support long-term communication and swallowing goals.
  • Deliver services in diverse settings, including hospitals, community health centres, schools, private practices, aged care, or NDIS-funded programs, always prioritising client-centred, culturally responsive care.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • A recognised Speech Pathology / Speech-Language Pathology qualification from a South African university or institution (e.g., Bachelor or Master's in Speech-Language Pathology, leading to HPCSA registration), and you must be eligible for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Having current HPCSA registration or proof that you qualify is a big advantage.
  • At least 3 years of post-qualification clinical work experience as a Speech Pathologist (full-time equivalent). We’re keen to hear from people with solid, relevant experience in areas like paediatrics, adult neurology, dysphagia, voice disorders, fluency, schools, hospitals, or community/rehab settings.
  • Good English language proficiency. Since most South African Speech Pathology training is in English, this is often accepted as adequate (though formal testing may be required for SPA/OSQCA pathway).
  • A real interest in moving to Australia and working towards permanent residency.

We particularly welcome South African Speech Pathologists with 3 or more years’ experience who are anywhere on the migration journey – whether you’ve already started looking into SPA skills assessment (Overseas Qualified Competency Assessment), got your portfolio underway, or you’re just thinking about making the move.
