Introduction

The role of a consultant Microbiologist is pivotal in supporting both clinicians and patients through expert consultation regarding the prevention and management of infectious diseases, while providing a reliable and prompt pathology service.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Oversee laboratory processes, review results and engage in relevant clinical discussions with clients in the private sector.

• Ensure quality standards are maintained by all members of staff, both patient facing and within the laboratory.  Assists with training of laboratory staff in microbiology and infection control.

• Engage with clinicians, offering support in management of patients, while building collaborative relationships and upholding the credibility of the laboratory

• Strong communication, clinical reasoning and leadership skills are requirements in this key role at Lancet laboratories

• Promote laboratory services in an ethical and professional manner.  This includes engaging with pharmacy and infection control teams and offering services that promote preventive and curative options in infectious diseases

• Attends training and seminars and participates in continuing professional development (CPD) activities to continuously update knowledge and skills as well as comply with professional registration requirements.

• Adheres to professional conduct requirements in line with organisational policy and relevant professional body ethical standards.

Desired Experience & Qualification

MbCHB, FC Path SA (Microbiology) and MMed (Pathology – microbiology).

Candidates must be registered with the HPCSA as a specialist pathologist in Microbiology. 

Relevant work experience in the role of consultant microbiologist is essential.

Package & Remuneration

Compensation is commensurate with qualification and experience level.
