Laboratory Manager

Summary:

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for performing education and observing chemical tests on patients or control specimens by clinical staff using the lab and correctly records appropriate results and uses and maintains all laboratory equipment correctly. The Laboratory Manager is also responsible for ensuring region-wide compliance with state and federal Clinical Laboratory rules and regulations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Assist, when able, in new lab startups on equipment and ensure tests systems are functioning properly within region.
• Be accessible to the lab to provide on-site or telephone consultation, as needed.
• Responsible for facilitating laboratory quality system activities as it relates to internal laboratory testing.
• Understands CLIA and COLA requirements and ensures compliance with regulatory agencies.
• Assist with yearly as well as new hire orientation of staff members.
• Oversees all controls, calibrations and proficiency testing performed within region.
• Understands the importance of acceptable levels of analytical performance such as pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical procedures.
• Resolve technician problems and ensure that remedial actions are taken whenever systems deviate from established performance specifications.
• Identify training needs of staff as well as ensure regular in-service and education training for staff members and communicate these to the district Facility Director.
• Maintain and use all instruments in the Clinical Laboratory safely and correctly.
• Responsible for ensuring district-wide compliance with state and federal Clinical Laboratory rules and regulations.
• Responsible for traveling to each of the Facilities in the region each month, unless otherwise specified.
• Completes Lab Review Checklist on each Facility per visit, unless otherwise specified.
• Attends monthly meetings with other Laboratory Managers to discuss the status of all Facilities in the region.
• Perform quality control procedures and maintain records on these checks.
• Perform calibrations in compliance with manufacturer’s requirements.
• Ensures proficiency testing specimens are done at each center in compliance with policy.
• Assist in overseeing documentation of temperatures/humidity checks.
• Maintains current appropriate and needed policies and procedures.
• Demonstrate knowledge of new testing methods, products and instrumentation; remain informed on all current technologies in use at Altus Community Healthcare (ACH).
• Demonstrate the values to team concept on a consistent basis.
• Interact professionally with all department members, physicians, staff, administration and the Director of Clinical Laboratory.
• Responsible for documenting correct information for compliance purposes.
• Maintaining lab compliance at assigned sites across the region.
• Ensure appropriate staffing for all assigned sites. 
• Remain knowledgeable about appropriate testing procedures
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited school.
• Minimum of 1+ years of lab experience.
• Must be able to travel out of town.

LANGUAGE/MATH/REASONING ABILITY

• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situation.
