About the role |Ngā kōrero mō te tūranga
We are seeking a motivated and skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our Haematology Department in Auckland. This is a permanent, full-time role (80 hours per fortnight) within a high-performing team delivering a broad range of routine and specialist diagnostic testing using advanced automated systems.

 

In this role, you will play a key part in morphology testing, ensuring accurate and timely results that directly support patient care. You’ll contribute to daily laboratory workflow, assist with equipment maintenance, and uphold the highest standards of quality and safety, including participation in internal and external quality programmes. This position also includes involvement in weekend and on-call rosters, offering variety and the opportunity to further develop your specialist haematology skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform and interpret routine and special haematology including morphology.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of laboratory results in line with quality standards.
  • Contribute to workflow organisation and help prioritise tasks to meet service requirements.
  • Participate in internal and external quality control programmes.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and report any issues to ensure optimal performance.
  • Follow established laboratory processes and quality systems.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Keep up to date with developments in haematology and maintain professional standards.

 

About you | He kōrero mōu:

To succeed in this role you will need:

  • A registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with an Annual Practising Certificate.
  • Ability to work rostered shifts, including weekends.
  • Strong commitment to accuracy, efficiency, and high-quality results.
  • Proven ability to interpret complex laboratory data and report findings confidently.
  • Skilled in workflow prioritisation and working collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Experience supporting or mentoring junior laboratory staff is ideal but not essential.
  • Familiarity with quality assurance systems and a proactive approach to continuous improvement.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to provide technical and scientific advice.
  • The ability to work in a methodical manner adhering to strict quality procedure guidelines.
  • Committed to health and safety compliance and maintaining a clean, safe work environment.
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
