Medical Technologist

Reports To: Administrative Director or Laboratory Supervisor
Job Summary
The Medical Technologist performs diagnostic laboratory testing on blood and other specimens using manual and automated methods. This role is responsible for specimen collection, test analysis, result interpretation and reporting, and supporting quality, safety, and regulatory compliance. The Medical Technologist may assist with blood bank compatibility testing and provides cross-coverage as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect and process patient specimens, including venipuncture
- Perform laboratory testing according to established procedures
- Review, interpret, and accurately report test results in the LIS
- Identify and report critical and abnormal results
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments
- Perform quality control, calibrations, and proficiency testing
- Maintain supplies, equipment, and a clean work environment
- Assist with training and orientation of new staff
- Ensure compliance with CLIA, regulatory, and safety standards
- Provide general supervisory coverage when required
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related science
OR
- 60 semester hours with required science and laboratory coursework
Experience:
- Completion of an approved clinical laboratory training program
OR
- Minimum 3 months documented training in each testing specialty performed
Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
- Proficient phlebotomy skills
- Ability to recognize abnormal or inconsistent results
- Effective communication and teamwork skills
Certification
- Medical Technologist (ASCP) or equivalent certification required
- Must obtain certification within one year of hire if not currently registered
