Introduction

An exciting opportunity exists within National Asphalt for a Regional Laboratory Manager. The position will be based at either Bon Accord or Portland and will be responsible for overseeing multiple laboratory sites across the Cape or Gauteng region. The successful candidate must be willing and able to travel regularly to these sites.
The Regional Laboratory Manager will oversee laboratory operations across multiple sites, ensuring compliance with testing standards, maintaining quality control systems, managing equipment calibration and maintenance, developing staff capabilities, and driving continuous improvement in laboratory performance and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure all documented test methods and reference standards are strictly followed
  • Prepare and review daily quality control (QC) test plans and reports
  • Identify staff training needs and coordinate development with Technical Managers
  • Ensure the laboratory environment is maintained in accordance with relevant testing standards
  • Initiate and manage corrective actions based on testing feedback
  • Monitor and record environmental conditions in line with documented procedures
  • Maintain all relevant technical literature, including manufacturers’ manuals
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance and intermediate check schedules for equipment
  • Verify and review all test records and laboratory documentation
  • Ensure all equipment calibration is traceable to national and international standards
  • Manage the timely re-calibration of equipment before expiry
  • Optimize the use of laboratory resources
  • Ensure proper recordkeeping at all stages of testing and quality control
  • Review and authorize daily laboratory records
  • Ensure safe and proper handling of samples and materials throughout the laboratory
  • Review test worksheets upon completion of testing activities
  • Provide technical training and guidance to laboratory technicians
  • Coordinate inter-laboratory comparisons and evaluate results
  • Ensure periodic calculation of measurement uncertainty for all test parameters
  • Oversee both preventive and breakdown maintenance of equipment
  • Manage the procurement of laboratory consumables
  • Handle and investigate customer complaints

Qualification

  • Grade 12; Degree or National diploma in Civil engineering, Chemistry or related, with 5-8 years’ industry-related proven experience.
