- A BSc degree (NQF level 7) in Veterinary Technology with a focus in Veterinary Microbiology, Parasitology, Haematology; Pathology; Toxicology or Biosecurity;
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a veterinary laboratory with microbiology, pathology and parasitology.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
- An honours or MSc degree in Veterinary Technology / Veterinary related field (NQF level 8/9).
- Accreditation with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) or Safe & Vault Technicians Association (SAVTA).
- Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC).
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Veterinary Sample Collection & Handling
- Veterinary Diagnostic Techniques:
§ Microbiology - Culture, isolation, staining (e.g., Gram staining)
§ Parasitology - Identification of parasites (ova, cysts, larvae)
§ Hematology - Blood smears, PCV, differential counts
§ Molecular Diagnostics - PCR, ELISA basics
§ Toxicology & Mycotoxin Analysis (advantages)
§ Use and maintenance of Microscopes; Centrifuges ; Autoclaves ; PCR machines
§ Calibration and troubleshooting
- Quality Assurance & Laboratory Management:
§ Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)
§ Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) adherence
§ Quality control and validation
§ Record keeping and documentation
§ Laboratory accreditation awareness (e.g., ISO standards)

REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
